First International Symposium on Internet and Psychiatry:

Benefits, Risks, Perspectives

Online with your doctor? - Internet addiction: a new illness?

Internet and medicine and their mutual benefits will be the topics of the First International Symposium on "Internet and Psychiatry" that will take place on April 5th/6th 2001 at the University of Munich, Department of Psychiatry. Participants will discuss the world wide web and its benefits and risks for patients and psychiatrists.

Individuals with psychiatric disorders are often stigmatised in society and do not dare to avow their illness in public. The internet and its anonymous atmosphere may offer them refuge to search for information concerning their disorder. But risks - among them internet addiction - should not be disregarded. Are there successful treatments for the new addiction?

The symposium is supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the German Ministry for Research and Education which initiated the German Research Network on Depression.
